Instructions:
1. Prepare the Chocolate Cake Layers
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix and chocolate pudding mix.
- Prepare the cake batter according to the package instructions, then fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans before removing them onto wire racks to cool completely.
2. Prepare the Chocolate Ganache Filling
- In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
- Place the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl.
- Pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips and let it sit for 2-3 minutes to allow the chocolate to soften.
- Stir the mixture until smooth and creamy.
- Set aside to cool slightly while you prepare the frosting.
3. Prepare the Chocolate Frosting
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter until creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until smooth and fluffy.
- Beat in the vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually pour in the cooled chocolate ganache, beating until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
4. Assemble the Cake
- Place one of the cooled cake layers on a serving platter or cake stand.
- Spread a layer of chocolate ganache over the top of the cake layer.
- Place a second cake layer on top and repeat the process with another layer of ganache.
- Place the final cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the chocolate frosting, spreading it evenly over the top and sides.
- If desired, garnish the cake with whipped cream and additional chocolate chips.
- Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.
